What Happens in a Bible Class at Decker Prairie Church of Christ? An Honest Walkthrough

A linocut print in three greens: plain closed books lie in a ring on the prairie grass near a live oak

Here is the plain answer, from our congregation to you: a Bible class is people sitting down with open Bibles while a teacher leads a study through a book of Scripture or a Bible subject. And no, you do not have to come. Classes are separate from worship, many first-time visitors at the Decker Prairie church of Christ come for worship only, and nobody here thinks a thing of it.

Since “Bible class” can sound intimidating from the outside, let us walk you through the hour the way you would actually experience it.

What You’d See Walking In

A classroom or a section of the building, chairs, and Bibles. A teacher up front, not a performer, someone guiding a study. You pick a seat, any seat. Nobody hands you a task, and nobody announces you. If it is your first time, the most anyone will do is smile and make sure you can find the room.

How the Hour Runs

The teacher leads, and everyone follows along in their own Bible. Some of our classes work verse by verse through a book like Acts or Romans; others take a subject, such as prayer or the life of Christ, and trace it through Scripture. People ask questions as they come up, and the text stays at the center of the hour. The feel is an open study, not a lecture, and that is on purpose. It is the habit Scripture praises: “they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (). Check everything the teacher says against the page. That is not rude here; that is the assignment.

The Promise We Make Every Visitor

No one will call on you to read aloud, answer a question, lead a prayer, or introduce yourself. You can keep your Bible closed and just listen, for one week or for six months. If you do want to ask something, please do. A question from someone new is usually the best part of the class. And you need no Bible knowledge at all to walk in. We’re all at different stages of our walk with Jesus and we’re simply here to help each other learn and grow.

Why We Have Classes at All

The worship assembly is where the New Testament shows the church gathering together to offer praise to God and for building each other up (; ). Classes are one arrangement a congregation uses to do the teaching and encouraging God gave the church to do (). That is why they matter to us, and also why there is no attendance sheet. Some folks worship with us for weeks before trying a class; some try a class first because a classroom feels easier than an auditorium. Either order works.

What Your Kids Would Be Doing

Our classes are arranged by age, so children hear the Bible in words and formats that fit them. The youngest hear its stories, and the teens dig into the text itself. That is Bible teaching and nothing else, the same pattern Timothy was raised on: “from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (). You are welcome to sit in on your child’s class, especially the first time, or you are welcome to bring your children with you to an adult class.

Before You Come

One honest note about schedules. Since Decker Prairie church of Christ is not part of a larger religious organization or headquarters, we can only speak for ourselves. Our own times are below; if you are visiting elsewhere, check theirs first.

Keep Studying

A Bible class is your own Bible reading, with company and a little help. Keep reading at home, keep asking real questions, and take whatever next step feels manageable, whether that is a worship service, a classroom, or the book of Acts at your kitchen table. If you want a little company or guidance with your Bible reading, but a classroom feels too big, reach out to us to arrange for a one-on-one or small group study.

Come When You’re Ready

If your days feel full but somehow hollow, an hour with an open Bible and people who genuinely want you there is refreshing and fulfilling. At the Decker Prairie church of Christ there is a class, a seat, and a church family waiting whenever you want to join us.

Plan your visit, and you’ll be right at home.
